1. Get help from the store:Buy frozen pigs in a blanket (Hebrew National brand is my favorite), pre-made hummus, or jarred salsa, if you're feeling overwhelmed. They're easy additions to a Super Bowl party menu. No one will complain that they're from the store when their eyes are glued on the game.

2. Make more of a few dishes, NOT a little bit of a lot of dishes: It's easier to estimate how much you'll need to make of 3-4 dishes than 5-6 to feed a crowd. Plus, it takes almost the same amount of energy and dirty dishes to make 12 portions of Super Bowl food as it does to make 5 portions of it. For those 3-4 dishes, I like to do one or two hot items (like chili, pizza, or wings), one cold one (like a creamy dip with veggies and chips or sandwiches), and 1 "bar snack" in bowls sprinkled around the room (like mixed spiced nuts or crunchy roasted chickpeas).

3. Keep some of it fresh: Not only is having a veggie and dip platter a thoughtful option for your guests who are still sticking to their New Year's resolutions, but it's also a load off your mind. But let's not forget about New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning. Probably the heartiest pizza you can make on your own, and pretty easily, this pizza is a great main course for a Super Bowl party and will keep everyone full enough to last as long as the game does.

Ingredients:
1 1/4 cups barbecue sauce
1 clove garlic, finely minced
1 to 1 1/2 cups leftover roast beef, sliced and diced or cut in thin strips
1/2 medium red onion, sliced
2 small plum tomatoes, thinly sliced
3/4 cup Monterey Jack and Colby or Cheddar cheese blend
1 cup shredded Mozarella cheeseburger or beef grill seasoning blend, optional

4. Grilled Chinese Pork Back Ribs

Ribs are obviously one of the best party foods, and combining them with traditionally Chinese flavors is a recipe for success.

6. Wild Boar Chili with Garam Masala

If you want to give your guests a totally different (and excellent) tasting chili, then this is the one. Originally devised by a guy who grew up in Kentucky with parents from India, it's an awesome mix of two unique traditions.

Ingredients:
4 tbsp olive oil
3 lbs wild-boar leg, ground
1 lb pork shoulder, ground twice
1 thick slab bacon, minced
coarse salt and ground black pepper
1 large onion, minced
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 jalapeño, deseeded and minced
kosher salt and ground black pepper
2 tbsp tomato paste
2 qts sweet cherry tomatoes (about 8 cups), cut in half
4 tbsp garam masala spice mix
2 cups chicken stock
2 15-oz cans red kidney beans, rinsed and drained cilantro for garnish

Paula Out on X Factor?

Today at The X Factor was a bloodbath which just claimed its biggest name. Not only was host Steve Jones let go and judge Nicole Scherzinger exited from the Fox show today, but now a Simon Cowell insider just told me that his longtime friend and American Idol colleague Paula Abdul won’t be returning as an X Factor judge next season.

Source say that none of the three left on their own accord and that it was cleaning house day at the so-so rated show. It’ll be interesting to see if there’s any backlash against Simon because of Paula’s popularity. Last April Cowell in addition to himself and ”L.A.” Reid, he had made up his mind to bring back Paula beside him for the show’s premiere season. 

“I missed her the second she left the show. Always loved working with her even though she can be a pain. I don’t know what it is about her, but I’ve always clicked with her. You just have to get that chemistry, and she’s right. I’ve never found anyone better than her,” Cowell told me at the time. It took several months for her contract to be pinned down, but Abdul was the most famous judge on the show behind only Cowell’s. 

Meanwhile, Fox confirmed today the departures of both Scherzinger as a judge as well in addition to host Jones. The two, originally paired as co-hosts, had been considered the weakest links and likely casualties going into Season 2. But my news that Abdul is out as well comes as a surprise even though Cowell’s X Factor had a ho-hum first season.

Camel Predicts Giants Will Win The Super Bowl
A camel in New Jersey predicts that the New York Giants will win the Super Bowl. Princess, the star of New Jersey’s Popcorn Park Zoo, has correctly picked the winner of five of the last six Super Bowls. She went 14 and 6 predicting regular season and playoff games this year, and has a lifetime record of 88-51. The Bactrian camel’s prognostication skills stem from her love of graham crackers. Zoo general manager John Bergmann writes the name of the competing teams on each hand and then places a cracker on each. Whichever hand Princess nibbles from is her pick. On Wednesday, she made her pick with no hesitation at all, predicting bad news for the Patriots even though Las Vegas oddsmakers have New England favored by about 3 points. Her only miscue in the big game was picking the Indianapolis Colts over the New Orleans Saints two years ago.

Elephant Gets Contact Lens
A 45-year-old Asian elephant at a Netherlands zoo has become the first of her species in Europe to be outfitted with a contact lens. Officials with the Artis Zoo in Amsterdam said the elephant, Win Thida, had to undergo surgery and be outfitted with a contact lens after her eye was badly injured during a fight with another elephant.

 ‘Alcatraz’ Fans Trying To Break Into Prison
While the new show “Alcatraz” has only been on Fox since last week, it is already starting to get visitors to the real Alcatraz island in trouble. Some fans have been infiltrating guided tours on the real-life island to search for a top secret room – which only exists on the show. National Parks Service rep Alexandra Picavet said tourists are starting to stray from their tours and sneak into “closed areas” on the former federal prison. Picavet says many of them have confessed they’re looking for a high tech control room, described on the show as a “bat-cave underneath Alcatraz.” Picavet says they’ve now posted a sign on the island reading: “The TV show ‘Alcatraz’ is fictional, many areas it depicts are not real. Closed areas protect you, historic structures and nesting birds.”
