Erie Canal to remain closed through Mohawk Valley

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) _ State officials say a 125-mile stretch of the Erie Canal from the Albany area to central New York has been closed because of high water caused by severe flooding.

The Canal Corp. says the waterway from Lock E-2 in Waterford in southern Saratoga County to Lock E-22 in Verona in Oneida County is closed Friday because of flooding caused by heavy rains. Much of the canal over the stretch runs in the Mohawk River, which has overflowed its banks in many areas.

The latest closure extends an earlier shutdown of the canal from Lock E-8 in Scotia in Schenectady County to Lock E-15 in Fort Plain in Montgomery County.

Officials say additional closures of other sections of the canal system are likely.
